“Yahweh said to me: “Even a strong person is cursed when his confidence rests in his own strength. To place your confidence in the strength of man means that you are turning your heart away from me.” Jeremiah 17:5 TPT
What is a curse? It means to make light, to lightly esteem, or to despise something. When we shift our attention away from the Lord and put our trust in any person or thing other than God, we bring ourselves into a place of curses. Suddenly, we become lightly esteemed in the sight of both God and man. Self-imposed curses are not only about trusting others or things; they also include trusting in ourselves.
Many people boast about their strength, achievements, and abilities, believing they are self-made or self-sustained. But this is unnecessary and dangerous, for it leads to pride and destruction. The Lord requires total dependence and reliance on Him alone—not on ourselves, money, guns, people, connections, or anything created. His word warns us clearly: “Don’t put your confidence in powerful people; there is no help for you there.” Psalms 146:3 NLT.
You may come from a great family, nation, school, or workplace, but you are never to build your faith and confidence on them. You may have medical, vehicle, or house insurance, but they cannot deliver you from death, danger, or destruction. Only the Lord must take His rightful place as your source and security.
The Lord rebukes those who run their lives without consulting Him: “Woe to the obstinate children… who carry out plans that are not mine… who go down to Egypt without consulting me; who look for help to Pharaoh’s protection…” (Isaiah 30:1-3 NIV). To live independently of God—making decisions without His direction—is a self-imposed curse. You were never designed to run life by personal logic or human wisdom alone.
God has wonderful, pre-designed plans for everyone who has ever come into the earth. Ephesians 2:10 (AMPC) reveals that we are God’s workmanship, created to walk in the good works He planned beforehand. As we grow in the Word, we discover His plan for our business, marriage, ministry, relationships, and destiny. Don’t go to the world for wisdom on how to build what God authored—His Word has it already written.
However, if you choose your own path or rely on worldly alliances (“Egypt”), God declares woe—a cry of grief, regret, and destruction. But you can make a change today. Declare: The Lord God, Maker of heaven and earth, is my source, my help, and my protection. I put my confidence only in Him. I walk in His plan, His will, and His paths always, in the name of Jesus.
