Two kinds of righteousness

Two kinds of righteousness

Philippians 3:9 (KJV) “…And be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ—the righteousness which is of God by faith.”

One of the most important truths every believer must understand is that there are two kinds of righteousness revealed in Scripture: the righteousness of the law and the righteousness of faith.

The righteousness of the Law is works-based righteousness. It is built on what man can do to be accepted before God. It focuses on human effort, personal performance, and moral perfection. Under the Law, people were required to obey commandments, offer sacrifices, and do everything right to be considered righteous.

The righteousness of the law magnifies human weakness because no man could ever keep the law perfectly. That is why Romans 3:20 says, “By the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in His sight.” This righteousness comes by human’s struggles to live right; the labor of man trying to please God through his own works.

The righteousness of faith, on the other hand, is a gift—not a reward for good behavior. It is not based on what you do, but on what you believe. It rests entirely on the finished work of Jesus Christ. Romans 3:22 says, “The righteousness of God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.” This righteousness comes not by our sacrifices, but by the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.

When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He completed the work of redemption. He took our sin and gave us His righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21). Now, when God looks at you, He sees you through the faithfulness of Jesus—not through your past, your failures, or your performance.

That’s why Paul declared, “Not having my own righteousness which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ.” In Christ, we are declared righteous, not because of what we’ve done, but because of what He has done.Hallelujah!!

CONFESSION

My righteousness is the righteousness of Jesus Christ; therefore, I have boldness in the presence of God, to worship Him in love and holiness of truth. The blood of Jesus gave me access and life, and by His resurrection, I stand justified forever, with dominion over Satan, circumstances, and the cohorts of darkness. Blessed be God!

DEEPER REFLECTION

2 Corinthians 5:21(KJV) For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Romans 3:20(KJV) Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Galatians 2:16(KJV) Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
