Honour your parents in the Lord

Honour your parents in the Lord
Wednesday, September 10th

Ephesians 6:1-3 (AMPC) Children, obey your parents in the Lord [as His representatives], for this is just and right. Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother; this is the first commandment with a promise, that all may be well with you and that you may live long on earth.

Our opening scripture reminds us that we should honour both our parents because they are God’s representatives. They stand in His place, and that is why they have the power to bless you. Some people choose to honour one parent while dishonouring the other, but child of God, that honour is incomplete. The Bible clearly tells us to honour both father and mother: " Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother; this is the first commandment with a promise" (Ephesians 6:2).

Dishonour opens the door to demonic attacks in our lives. If you trace the root cause of certain challenges, you may discover that there is dishonour somewhere.
It is God’s will that we honour our parents because they gave us the life we have today. However, for those whose parents have passed on, or who may not know their biological parents, you are called to honour the one who raised you or the person fulfilling parental responsibilities in your life. Learn to listen to your parents. If their instructions ever contradict your faith, respond respectfully. This becomes easier when you cultivate a healthy relationship with them.

Sadly, some people begin dishonouring their parents when they grow older and attain positions of influence. But remember, if you want things to go well with you, you must continue to honour your parents regardless of your age or status. Never forget the sacrifices your parents made. There were nights when they stayed awake because you were sick as a child. That is why the Bible tells us to esteem and value them as precious. Even the gifts you present to them should be thoughtful and respectable.

For those who are married, remember you have two sets of parents to honour: your biological parents and your spouse’s parents. Both deserve honour. Therefore, choose to honour your parents in all seasons of life, regardless of your position or achievements. By doing so, you will walk in the blessing promised in Ephesians 6:3 (TPT): “You will prosper and live a long, full life if you honor your parents.” Hallelujah!

CONFESSION

I honour my parents, esteeming and valuing them as precious. I choose to listen to them and respect their guidance. I walk in the blessing of honouring my parents, and I declare that all is well with me. I will prosper and live a long, full life, honouring God and my parents. Amen."
